New Zealand might struggle to field 11 players on Friday night for their Champions Trophy one-dayer against Sri Lanka.
Of the 14 strong squad, only 11 have practised overnight; as Shane Bond awaits news of an MRI on his stiff back, Scott Styris has been keeping the weight off his back niggle in the hotel pool, while Mark Gillespie has been feverish with a slight rash.
Wicket-keeper Brendon McCullum says the Black Caps have become a stronger unit with the depth that is in the squad - at least when all the players are fully fit.
He says they feel completely comfortable with the lineup they have, and competition for places is hot.
Black Caps general manager Lindsay Crocker said Bond would only be used if absolutely necessary.
"We are not in a must-win situation yet and have tended to adopt a conservative approach with his injuries in the past. It's a long season," he said.
