The Black Caps' rise above Australia in the International Cricket Council test rankings has been short lived.
New Zealand moved into third following their test series win over England last month at Australia's expense, after they lost a test series to South Africa.
However, results from the 2014-2015 season have since been removed from the ranking equation, with those from the past two seasons now given extra weight.
It means Australia moves back into third and New Zealand drops to fourth.
India extends its lead over South Africa at the top the rankings.
