KEY POINTS:
CHITTAGONG - Left-arm spinner Shakib al Hasan took a record seven wickets to dismiss New Zealand for 171 on Sunday and then scored 71 to give Bangladesh a 258-run lead at the end of the third day of the first test.
Hasan's haul of 7-36 in 25.5 overs was Bangladesh's best bowling figures in a test innings. The 21-year-old bowler overhauled Enamul Haque's 7-95 against Zimbabwe in 2005 at Chittagong.
New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori took 4-39 to restrict Bangladesh to 184 for eight in its second innings at the end of play, following a top order collapse.
Mushfiqur Rahim and Hasan combined for a 56-run sixth wicket stand which ended when Rahim (32) was bowled by Iain O'Brien, with Bangladesh on 127.
Hasan's 48-run seventh-wicket stand with Nayeem Islam steered Bangladesh to 175, and included a knock of 50 off 105 balls with 9 boundaries.
Vettori picked up two late wickets with the new ball. He first removed Hasan, caught by Taylor, and trapped Nayeem Islam leg before wicket for 19 with Bangladesh on 180. Hasan's 71 run innings came off 151 balls with a dozen boundaries.
Mashrafee bin Murtaza (5) and Abdur Razzak (0) were undefeated at stumps.
After dismissing New Zealand early on the third day, Bangladesh slumped to 49-4 at lunch - leading New Zealand by 123 - after losing its first three wickets for just 13 runs.
Kyle Mills dismissed opening batsman Zunaid Siddiqui for 6, Jeetan Patel trapped Rajin Saleh lbw for 6, and Vettori took out Mohammad Ashraful for a duck as Bangladesh was left reeling at 37-3.
Opener Tamim Iqbal partnered with Mehrab Hossain to steady the innings, before Hossain (6) became Patel's second wicket.
Iqbal paired with Rahim to add another 22 runs and take the score to 71, before Vettori caught and bowled Iqbal at 33.
Resuming on an overnight score of 155-9, New Zealand fell short of Bangladesh's modest first innings of 245, despite a defiant half-century by Vettori.
Vettori, who finished with an unbeaten 55, combined with tailender O'Brien to add 16 runs. Hasan bowled O'Brien for 5 to return career best figures of 7-36 in 25.5 overs. Vettori's 50 came off 73 balls and included six boundaries.
Bangladesh has never won a test against New Zealand, losing five of their six previous matches by an innings. New Zealand won the preceding limited-overs series 2-1.
