It was all depressingly familiar viewing for long-suffering New Zealand fans and extended their grim record now to two wins in 27 tests in Australia, going back to 1973.
Pattinson, on debut, at one point had five for seven as a procession of batsmen came and went, failing to cover his outswing deliveries.
After Martin Guptill turned a short ball straight to short leg, Kane Williamson, captain Ross Taylor and nightwatchman Doug Bracewell all touched catches behind the wicket.
Jesse Ryder, having got to 36 with a series of bold shots, got out in soft fashion, lobbing offspinner Nathan Lyon's second ball to deep mid off.
Dean Brownlie and Dan Vettori, who had rescued New Zealand from a calamitous start to the start in the first innings with a 158-run stand for the sixth wicket, battled hard in putting on 52 before Vettori was out in the over before lunch.
Brownlie departed shortly after the restart for 42, wicketkeeper Reece Young got New Zealand in credit before the innings ended.
Pattinson took five for 27 from 11 overs, while Lyon bagged three for 19, giving him seven for 88 in the match.
New Zealand's batting was wretched and considering they were talking a good game before the start, showed depressingly little, apart from Brownlie and Vettori.
Perth-raised Brownlie batted a tick short of six hours in the test, but those ahead of him in the order lacked the fortitude and technique to survive on a ground where
New Zealand - apart from the Richard Hadlee-inspired innings win in 1985 - have taken some severe beatings.
The second test starts in Hobart, on Friday.
