KEY POINTS:
NOTTINGHAM - A devastating spell by England's James Anderson reduced New Zealand's batting lineup to rubble as hopes of a cricket series-squaring win were effectively snuffed out here today.
Anderson, relishing the swing-friendly Trent Bridge, removed the first six New Zealand batsmen as the tourists limped to 96 for six in the third test before dark clouds rolled in to prolong their innings into day three.
Captain Daniel Vettori and debutant Gareth Hopkins will resume with New Zealand still trailing by 268, another 69 needed to avoid the follow-on and Anderson a chance of emulating compatriot Jim Laker's feat of 10 wickets in a test innings.
Anderson ended with six for 42 off 15 overs, his best test figures, after a memorable day when he also notched his highest test score of 28.
It was New Zealand's most calamitous day of the tour, topping their day three collapse at Old Trafford, after Anderson and Stuart Broad, who scored 64, clawed England to 364 after being 86 for five.
New Zealand opener Jamie How showed the best technique against Anderson's outswingers, batting two hours for a breezy 40, before he became the Lancashire paceman's fifth victim, caught behind.
Aaron Redmond and promoted No 3 Brendon McCullum both tried to hit through the leg side and had their off stumps uprooted, Ross Taylor fell to a loose drive to backward point, and Daniel Flynn lasted just three balls in his batting comeback before being trapped leg before wicket.
Jacob Oram survived his nemesis Ryan Sidebottom before Anderson nicked him out for seven to one that swung away from the left-hander.
New Zealand were 57 for two at tea, with How and Taylor looking composed, before they lost four for 31 in 11.3 overs.
How said Anderson's outswing under leaden skies made it tricky, but did his best to put on a brave face.
"He was putting us under a lot of pressure. You can always play them better, and a few guys were disappointed with their dismissals, myself included," How said.
"There's plenty of work to do but the changing room's still pretty positive."
Anderson, 25, struggled to believe what he'd done in "ideal conditions" as he celebrated his first six-wicket haul in his 25th test.
"It's the best day I've had. I can't remember anything that comes close really," he said.
"I probably have bowled better. In Wellington (in March) I bowled well and against India at Lord's last year. Here I just got the nicks, I didn't bowl as consistently as I would have liked but I just got enough balls in the right area. "
New Zealand began the day with high hopes of skittling England for under 300 but instead they toiled for 36.5 overs and nearly 2-1/2 hours to snare the final three wickets.
It meant 278 runs were added for the final five wickets after New Zealand pacemen Kyle Mills and Iain O'Brien had England reeling 24 hours earlier.
Stuart Broad and Anderson both notched their highest test scores, Broad topping his best of 42 in Napier in March and Anderson going past his 21 not out against South Africa five years ago.
The pair added 76 for the eighth wicket, aided by a bad miss by McCullum in the day's third over.
Senior paceman Chris Martin bowled a much-improved spell, beating the bat several times, but was mortified to watch McCullum shell a regulation chance at second slip with Broad on 21.
The economical Oram finally broke the partnership when he nicked out Anderson, then Martin skittled Broad after he'd batted just short of three hours.
Martin and Vettori had to wait until their 22nd and 29th overs respectively for their first wickets.
