Auckland allrounder Andre Adams has backed the Black Caps' recall for Jeff Wilson, even though his international hopes were hit by the former All Black's elevation.
Adams' best match figures of 10 for 118 spearheaded Auckland to a six-wicket win over Wellington at Eden Park yesterday.
Their fourth outright victory puts Auckland in a prime position at the halfway stage for a home final as they are two outright victories ahead of second-placed Northern Districts.
Adams captured six for 25 as the visitors crashed to be all out for 97 in their second innings. Auckland were hardly tested in reaching the 207 target for victory. It was Adams' first 10-wicket haul and came with Auckland surviving most of the match without the bowling of Tama Canning, who had a side strain.
Adams and Canning missed out when Wilson was chosen to face the World XI. While Canning questioned Wilson's credentials, Adams has taken a different approach.
"I was disappointed but I don't choose the team and Jeff doesn't choose himself," Adams said.
"He is one of those talented exciting players and I actually wish him all the best - it's nice to have guys with the X factor.
"John Bracewell is looking to the 2007 World Cup and you need guys who can change games.
"Jeff strikes it cleanly and he's got good wheels in the field which is a big thing with Braces. He likes fielders who can turn twos into ones and that sort of thing. And Jeff's got experience in front of big crowds and is a guy who shares information freely and fits into a team.
"Whilst I wasn't happy about it, it doesn't leave a bad taste in my mouth. It was a perfect opportunity to look at him and I think he's done quite well."
Unless a New Zealand contract intervenes, Adams will return to Essex in winter and is determined not to let his international disappointment affect his thinking.
"If it happens it happens and I'll work my butt off for the Black Caps, but if I think about it too much it will drive me crazy. That ruined my cricket last year," he said.
Wellington added just 10 runs as Adams cleaned out their final four batsmen. Matt Horne (75) and Lou Vincent (53 not out) guided Auckland home. Wellington hardly fired a shot, with lion-hearted opening bowler Iain O'Brien one of the exceptions.
Adams said it was especially pleasing to win, despite Canning's bowling absence.
"Losing him here was like losing five or six wickets because he is absolutely outstanding on flat wickets."
