The Black Caps just missed out at the Cake tin in Wellington last night despite a gutsy batting performance.
Australia made 322 for 5 off their 50 overs in the second Chappell-Haddlee one-dayer, Andrew Symonds top-scoring with 156.
In reply, New Zealand made their highest ever chasing total before losing two wickets in the final over to be bowled out for 320.
The performance restored the Black Caps' pride after their capitulation in the first match on Saturday.
