The day of the lawn bowl. It was Australia's first visit across the Tasman since the underarm incident. New Zealand got 240 for six, Bruce Edgar making 79. Australia were dismissed for 194, but the match is best remembered for Australian captain Greg Chappell, the underarm architect walking straight-backed on to a packed and feral Eden Park to a cacophony of noise. It didn't take long for a spectator to roll a lawn bowl out to the middle from the terraces. Chappell made a masterly 108, off 92 balls, the perfect riposte, if not enough to pull off a win.
Result: New Zealand won by 46 runs.

The opening game of the fifth World Cup, played by the joint hosts. New Zealand's 248 for six was highlighted by Martin Crowe's marvellous unbeaten 100. Australia were pressing hard as David Boon got to 100, only to be spectacularly run out by Chris Harris' rocket throw and direct hit from the deep.
