KEY POINTS:
Australia last night ruled allrounder Shane Watson out of contention to play in the second Ashes cricket test in Adelaide.
The Australian selectors will announce the squad later today for the second test against England, starting on Friday.
Watson was thought to be close to pushing for selection for the second test after being ruled out of the first test because of a hamstring strain.
Australia won the first test here today by 277 runs.
The selectors met yesterday to discuss a squad for the second test, but agreed to defer that decision until today after being told by team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris that Watson would not recover in time.
Watson's fitness blow means legspinner Stuart MacGill is the only realistic option of playing in Adelaide, although the efforts of batsman Michael Clarke and paceman Stuart Clark in Brisbane might conspire against him.
Clarke made 56 after replacing Watson, while Clark was the best bowler of the match and took a match haul of seven for 93.
