Otago chased down a mammoth 308 to beat Northern Districts in the final over yesterday and move into second on the Ford Trophy standings.
The hosts would have been confident in defending their first-innings effort at Mt Maunganui but a measured batting performance from the Otago Volts' top order saw them win by five wickets.
Aaron Redmond (64) and Sam Wells (93) laid the perfect platform with an opening stand of 134 and, while they were always behind the required run rate, the pair clearly trusted the hitting that was to follow.
That trust proved justified as Michael Bracewell smashed 83 from 48 balls before Derek de Boorder and Josh Finnie comfortably secured the nine runs required from Scott Kuggeleijn's final over.
Ish Sodhi was the Knights' only effective bowler in taking 3-48 from his 10 overs, as Daryl Mitchell's maiden list A century, an unbeaten knock coming from 98 balls, was squandered.
