The last thing Max Hughes won was a frozen chicken in a raffle and that was 20-odd years ago.
So it is maybe fitting that Max's entry was drawn out of the thousands of successful entries to win the Herald on Sunday/Emirates "Win A Trip To The World Twenty20 Tournament" competition last week.
Fitting, too, that Max, 59, is a long-time cricket fanatic - to the point that he once helped to sponsor Northern Districts' cricket and he says he also once represented former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull as manager.
Max lives at Lake Rotoiti, near Rotorua, and, though thrilled with his win, hasn't yet decided who he will take with him for the business-class trip to London and three nights' accommodation.
"I was the youngest of six kids by 12 years, brought up on a diet of rugby and cricket and have been involved all my life.
"The thought of being able to attend a match at Lord's is a real thrill and the other marvellous aspect of this is that my son Rodney is living in Britain. It is an absolute thrill for me to think I will be able to catch up with him and my grandsons, who I have not seen for a couple of years."
