"I thought Mitch bowled beautifully, executed his plans really well.
"We spoke a lot about using the conditions, the wicket was pretty flat and pretty good to bat on with the new ball.
"At one stage I think Mitch thought he wasn't going to get a bowl at all, I made it very clear he was going to be bowling but I was just trying to get the ball a bit older and then we would use his strength which is his pace but also he could use his angle to take the ball across the right-handers.
"I'm really happy with the way we won this game.''
Johnson's first seven-over spell when it did come turned the match.
After spinners Xavier Doherty (1-48) and David Hussey (1-12 off two) had removed openers Upul Tharanga (34) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (29), Johnson struck four times to leave the hosts reeling at 7-117.
The left-armer removed Mahela Jayawardene (3), Kumar Sangakkara (16), Jeevan Mendis (2) and Angelo Mathews (15) before returning later in the match to break a 60-run stand for the eighth wicket between Nuwan Kulasekara (34) and Suraj Randiv (41).
He then clean bowled Ajantha Mendis in the same over to complete a double-wicket maiden and his six-wicket haul.
Brett Lee (1-33) finished the innings by capturing his 350th ODI wicket - just the second Australia after Glenn McGrath (381) to pass that mark.
A disappointed Dilshan said his Sri Lanka team had let themselves down.
"Not enough runs on the board, 190 is not enough,'' the hosts' captain said.
"I think it was just bad shot selection, we gave away three wickets. Mitchell Johnson, he bowled really well, but we played bad shots.''
The next match in the five-match one-day series is at the Mahinda Rajapaksha International Stadium near the southern port city of Hambantota on Sunday.
The third match will be held at the same venue on August 16 before the series concludes with two matches in Colombo.
