Tim Southee has marked his test cricket debut with a five-wicket haul as England's first innings ended swiftly on day two of the third test against New Zealand at McLean Park here today.
The 19-year-old started the slide with the first ball of the morning when Stuart Broad edged to Brendon McCullum to depart for a test-best 42.
Chris Martin then skittled Monty Panesar for one before Southee had Ryan Sidebottom (14) skying to Matthew Bell at mid-off to end England's first innings on 253, 4.1 overs into morning session.
Southee ended with five for 55 off 23.1 overs, the sixth New Zealander to take five-wickets on test debut.
His figures were the third best on debut behind Alec Moir's six for 155 against England at Christchurch in 1951 and Fen Cresswell's six for 168, also against England on The Oval on the 1949 tour.
England had resumed on 240 for seven.
Kevin Pietersen's 129, his first century in 11 innings, was the cornerstone an an innings that had plummeted to four for three inside seven overs.
Fast bowler Broad was the second top scorer while Paul Collingwood made 30. Martin took two for 72 and spinner Jeetan Patel claimed two for 37 yesterday.
