Auckland held on for a draw in their Plunket Shield clash with Central Districts yesterday but both sides fell further adrift at the bottom of the ladder.
With Canterbury cruising to a six-wicket win over Northern Districts and Wellington crushing Otago, the two victors have streaked clear after four rounds of the competition.
But it could have been worse for Auckland after they slumped to 73-6 in their chase of 349 on the final day at Nelson Park in Napier. While all three results were in play when the day began with Central on 165-7, the runs the hosts added yesterday morning probably precluded Auckland from snatching victory.
That left the Aces with two-plus sessions to bat to salvage a draw, a prospect which appeared unlikely when Ben Wheeler and Peter Trego ran through the top order.
First innings centurion Martin Guptill was dismissed for five in the eighth over and, when Gareth Hopkins departed shortly after tea, Auckland were in serious trouble. But Tim McIntosh (57no) and Bruce Martin (55no) held firm, forming a 101-run stand for the seventh wicket to blunt the Stags' attack and leave both sides without a win.
