Brendon McCullum gave due credit to Australia, but insisted the gulf between the teams is not as great as the margin of defeat in the first test suggests.
"The size of the result was fair," the New Zealand skipper said, reflecting on the 208-run beating. "We were completely outplayed but I don't think it's an indication of the gap between the sides. We've shown over a long period that we're able to bounce back away from home.
"But we won't lose heart. We know we've got a good side and skilled players and our style, when we're able to get the ascendancy, works for us.
"We'll be better for the run in this test and the beauty is it's a three-match series and we've still got an opportunity to win it."
He bemoaned New Zealand missing a trick on the first day when the bowling let them down, through a lack of accuracy and patience.
