The wife of leading Bangladesh cricketer Tamim Iqbal was the target of an attempted hate crime in the United Kingdom on Tuesday (New Zealand time), according to a report by the Daily Star.
Iqbal, 28, a veteran of 173 one-day internationals and 49 tests, has since cut short his stint with the county outfit Essex and returned to Dhaka with his family.
The report quotes "a source close to the Bangladesh Cricket Board" stating Iqbal, a left-handed opener who only joined the team over the past weekend and had played one of the eight matches he was scheduled to be involved in, his wife Ayesha Siddiqa - who wears a Muslim headscarf - and their one-year-old son were dining at a restaurant on Tuesday when a group of men attempted to throw what is believed to be acid at Siddiqa.
It is not yet known exactly where the incident occurred, and according to the Daily Star Iqbal insisted he had returned home due to "personal reasons".
This after Essex had issued a statement confirming his departure from the team.
Iqbal was one of the star players of last month's Champions Trophy tournament in England, where the Tigers reached the semifinal before losing to eventual runners-up India.
