England left-arm paceman Alan Mullally captured five for 18 in a timely reminder to the selectors as Australia's cricketers suffered a rare off-day against Hampshire in Southampton.
The Australians were shot out for 97 and Hampshire stayed in control as an unbeaten fourth-wicket partnership of 122 between captain Robin Smith and Neil Johnson led the county to 238 for three at the close of the first day.
The three-day game is Australia's only warm-up before the third test against England starting at Trent Bridge on Thursday.
