Auckland have gone back to go forward in appointing Mark O'Donnell to guide the province in next summer's domestic cricket programme.
He replaces former test batsman Matt Horne, who did not reapply.
O'Donnell was in charge for seven seasons until 2008-09 during which time Auckland won five titles.
He has since worked for New Zealand and the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.
"Mark has a great record as a coach both for Auckland and elsewhere and we're very confident that he will be able to continue that success with the Mondiale Aces," Auckland Cricket chief executive Mark Cameron said.
