Auckland's bowlers were unable to replicate the good work of their batsmen as Otago today clawed their way back into their four-day contest.
Needing victory to remain in touch with the leaders, Auckland were in a position of strength after a fine opening day, but Otago's batsmen also found conditions to their liking on the second day at Eden Park's outer oval.
Otago advanced to 280-4 at stumps, trailing Auckland by 187 runs but frustrating their hosts' attempts to climb up the Plunket Shield ladder.
After adding 67 runs to their overnight score of 400-7, as Michael Bates chipped in with a handy 48 not out, Auckland immediately found the the opponents' rearguard difficult to crack.
Aaron Redmond and Hamish Rutherford racked up a quick 50 for the opening partnership before a double strike from Bruce Martin removed Redmond (31) and Michael Bracewell (3).
