The All Blacks Sevens gave it their all but Fiji were fully deserving champions for the 16th time in Hong Kong.
After the scores were locked at 7-7 at the break, Fiji eased away for a 21-7 Cup final victory, their second consecutive triumph at this event.
Minus the injured Tim Mikkelson and Sam Dickson, plus Scott Curry, Joe Webber and three Super Rugby stars, New Zealand opted for sensible physical tactics, which paid early dividends. They got up in the faces of the Fijians and Pita Ahki was able to profit, showing a sweet step and speed after a patient build-up.
But Jerry Duwai then dived over from a quick tap and Fiji drew level by the break.
New Zealand were competitive, courageous and physical, but one wonders how much their gruelling double extra time semifinal took its toll, as they could get little going in the second spell. Kitione Taliga and then final MVP Semi Kunatani took full advantage with tries, the latter score a rich example of Fijian sevens flair at its best.
