BRISBANE, Australia (AP) Controversial swimmer Nick D'Arcy has retired from international competition to concentrate on pursuing a medical career.
The 26-year-old D'Arcy's career was overshadowed by out-of-competition issues, including bans from the Australian team for the 2008 Olympics and 2009 World Championships after he was convicted of assaulting another swimmer at a Sydney bar. He pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to Simon Cowley incident and was given a suspended jail sentence.
He later declared himself bankrupt after being sued in a civil case.
D'Arcy, who confirmed his retirement to the Australian Broadcasting Corp, was highly rated in the 100-meter butterfly and returned to the Australian team for the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2012 London Olympics.
