Dave Johnson was not making any excuses for his Canadian swim team: he knew no gold medals at a meeting for the first time in 44 years was a reality check.
Canada won 18 medals in the Manchester pool - eight of them were silver. Four years earlier in Kuala Lumpur, the Canadians won four gold, six silver and nine bronze in swimming events.
"Quite frankly, I think it's representative of where our programme is at the moment," Johnson admitted. "Our ranks are pretty thin. We're looking at only three or four world-class swimmers and we need to get three times that [number] if we want to be in the medals."
