Shelley Kitchen will play off for the bronze medal against world squash No 1 Nicole David from Malaysia after her giant-killing run was halted by a fired-up Australian last night.
Kitchen was despatched in straight sets, 10-8, 9-4, 9-2 by Rachael Grinham, who has won medals at the last two Commonwealth Games and scored the British Open title in 2004.
It set up a dream final for the Australians as Rachael Grinham will now meet her sister Natalie Grinham in a play-off for the gold medal.
But it left Kitchen to play a difficult encounter to try to salvage a bronze, and pondering the wisdom of staging play-off games to decide the bronze medal in Melbourne.
