An Indian shooter is on target to smash the record for the most gold medals won at a single Commonwealth Games, held by Australian swimmers Ian Thorpe and Susie O'Neill.
Samaresh Jung was awarded his fifth gold medal yesterday, breaking Englishman Michael Gault's record of 679.9 in the men's 10m air pistol set at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games.
Jung finished with 685.4 while Gault was relegated to fifth place with 674.2. The Indian is two wins away from smashing the record for most golds won at a single Commonwealth Games.
Thorpe, who is not competing at these Games, claimed six gold medals at Manchester in 2002, and O'Neill scooped six golds at Kuala Lumpur in 1998.
Jung said he was focused on his sport rather than on chasing records. "I'm not interested in the record or gold," he said. "If I'm shooting well then I will be happy."
