There's a surprise inclusion in the extended New Zealand Sevens squad announced to train for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne next month.
All Black winger Doug Howlett is one of five Super 14 players in the 22-strong line-up, along with Josh Blackie, Sosene Anesi,Tanerau Latimer and Tamati Ellison.
Howlett has limited experience in the Sevens game, but coach Gordon Tietjens says he is an exciting prospect all the same.
Tietjens said everyone knows what a great athlete Howlett is, and he is also a useful rugby player.
Howlett has just six weeks to get his head around Sevens rugby, having had little experience at the top level.
Tietjens admitted it will be a challenge to get him conditioned to the game in such a short time, but his enthusiasm will make it all worth while.
He said Howlett is keen to represent New Zealand in Melbourne, having toyed with going to a Commonwealth Games as a sprinter in the past.
The squad will be cut down to 12 for the Games.
