The Victorian Premier, Steve Bracks, says the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony at the Melbourne Cricket Ground last night was a unique experience and a huge success.
"We said from the start that this would be an opening ceremony which was the best opening ceremony of any Commonwealth or Empire Games in history, and it was," he said.
"We said it would involve not only the MCG but the whole of the area, the precinct around the Yarra - and it did."
The ceremony began just after sunset with a kilometre-long procession of giant mechanical fish making its way along the Yarra River towards the MCG, escorted by Australian surf rescue boats.
Those inside the stadium witnessed the much talked about flying tram, Indigenous performers, big koalas, ballet dancers and amazing high wire work.
The occasion also featured the music of the Church, the Cat Empire, Delta Goodrem and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.
Giant video screens erected along the Yarra and throughout the city meant thousands more were able to join in the opening celebration.
The chairman of the Games, Ron Walker says the production was the result of great team work.
"We haven't always agreed with each other but we've worked together [very well], shoulder to shoulder and I think you've seen the product of that blood, sweat and tears," he said.
The Australian team received a thunderous round of applause as they entered the stadium, led by flag bearer Jane Saville before swimmer Adam Pine read out the athletes' oath.
Queen Elizabeth II announced the Games officially open in front of about 80,000 spectators.
"Tonight we celebrate the value of sport as a means of bringing together people from 71 nations and territories and from a wide range of cultures, traditions and beliefs," she said after the athletes paraded into the ground.
Meanwhile, Victoria Police say the large crowds that gathered to witness the opening ceremony were well-behaved.
About 100,000 people crowded the banks of the Yarra River and surrounding areas.
There was only one arrest made.
