More finals action for NZ swimmers

New Zealand should be at the business end of at least three finals at the Commonwealth Games pool tonight.

Breaststroker Glenn Snyders qualified equal fastest for the 50m final in 27.86s.

He will share top billing with South African Cameron van der Burgh.

Freestyler Hayley Palmer broke her New Zealand record in the heats of the 50m discipline.

She recorded 25.11, clipping .24s off her old mark in being fourth quickest qualifier overall.

Backstroke duo Daniel Bell and Gareth Kean are both through to the 100m final.

Bell briefly held the Games record after belting out a 54.38s effort before being overtaken. He is fourth best into the final while Kean, silver medallist in the 200m backstroke on Wednesday, qualified sixth fastest in 55.26.

Bell will be hoping a dose of illness does not hold him back late tonight.

"I'm not 100 percent," he said.

"I've got a bit of the runs. It's keeping me up at night but I've definitely got more to give."

Backstroker Emily Thomas, who failed to make the 100m final, is through to the 50m version, seventh quickest in 27.85s.

They should be joined by others out of this afternoon's heats, notably national recordholder Lauren Boyle in the 400m freestyle, while Melissa Ingram and Penny Marshall are in the 200m backstroke and there's a 4 x 100m freestyle relay to round out the first session of the day.
