The late flurry of medals left only gymnastics and wrestling of the 17 sports in which New Zealand were represented in Manchester without a medal.
Gymnastics did, however, go close with a fourth placing in the team's event.
Athletics, regarded at times as the under-achiever in New Zealand sport, will return home with four medals, and just as encouragingly, eight other top-10 finishes.
While shooting did not have quite the golden glow of past Games, it still picked up six medals and more than 20 other top-10 results.
In all, there were more than 70 top-10 finishes for New Zealand sportsmen and women to go with the 45 medals they collected.
