Black Sticks 5
Malaysia 0
The New Zealand women's hockey team have continued their good form at the Delhi Commonwealth Games with a crushing 5-0 defeat of Malaysia tonight.
Having already sealed a 5-1 win over Wales in their first game on Monday, it was a spirited New Zealand side that went into tonight's match.
Despite creating several opportunities early on, the Black Sticks were unable to find the back of the net until the dying minutes of the first half when they scored twice in quick succession.
Striker Anita Punt was first to score, putting a cheeky deflection through the Malaysian goalkeeper's legs. Captain Kayla Sharland extended the lead a minute later when she scored off a penalty corner, taking the scoreline to 2-0 at halftime.
New Zealand continued to dominate following the break, with two more goals within 10 minutes.
Anna Thorpe slipped the ball past the keeper in the 42nd minute, and Charlotte Harrison followed it up with another goal two minutes later.
The misery was not over for Malaysia, with New Zealand's Harrison sisters dealing the final blow to the team. With 10 minutes remaining, Sam Harrison smashed the ball across the circle to sister Charlotte, who flicked the ball into the net for her second goal.
Earlier in the evening, the New Zealand men's team secured a 7-1 win against Trinidad and Tobago in their opening match.
Three of New Zealand's goals came from penalty corners, two from Andy Hayward and another from Hayden Shaw, while the other four were field goals through Hugo Inglis, Nick Haig and Blair Hilton, who bagged two, one either side of halftime.
