Webster knew he was at peak form and ready to deliver.
"Everything clicked today. I knew from when I woke up, I was in a good space. Throughout my warm-up, I felt that my legs and head were in the same place – I was able to put together some really nice races.
"I was riding with a very diverse range of tactics and changing my style in a lot of rides and I think that versatility created unpredictability.
"When the racing begins, that's when the real battle starts and I came into my own today."
Webster's victory completed another strong day on the track for New Zealand, with 19-year-old Campbell Stewart winning silver in the 15 kilometre scratch race, and 20-year-old Emma Cumming claiming a surprise bronze earlier in the day.
Cumming finished third in the women's 500 metre time trial, upstaging her sprint team-mate Natasha Hansen.
She shaved more than a second off her previous best time in the event to edge Hansen by eight one thousandths of a second.
"I definitely didn't expect that at all, pretty overwhelming really to come away with a bronze medal," said Cumming.
"I took a massive PB and as an athlete to go out there and ride a personal best let alone come away with a bronze medal is absolutely phenomenal."
It was also Cumming's second medal of the Games, after previously claiming sprint silver alongside Hansen. She believes their friendly rivalry was a benefit to both riders.
"There's always a big competition between teammates and I got the best out of her this time. It's always an eager game between teammates but we're both so happy for each other."
Stewart finished the day in style for the New Zealand track team, snagging a silver medal in the final race of the day in the scratch race, only pipped by Australia's Sam Welsford.
He credited his teammates - Dylan Kennett and Nick Kergozou - for aiding his overall success.
"The teammates really helped me out there, we were able to pull it home in the end. Second's pretty awesome.
"We always had it lined up that I'd be able to try and go for the sprint, and I had two very strong guys who were able to help me and get me over the line there."
Stewart will back up tomorrow in the 40 kilometre points race with two new teammates, and is gunning to go one better.
"We're not going to shy away - we're really going to go hard and fight"
