Road cyclist Kirsty Robb admitted she wilted a little towards the end of the women's trial at Rivington, Bolton, and was unaware she was in range of a bronze medal at the halfway point.
The Holland-based Aucklander was fourth fastest of the 20 competitors after the first lap of the 23.4km course, 7s down on eventual runner-up Anna Millward, of Australia, but could not sustain the effort on a testing layout in hot conditions.
Robb was timed at 17m 44.09s, but was 20s slower on the ride home, to finish sixth in 35m 47.88s. Compatriot Melissa Holt was ninth in 36m 24.81s - 1m 33.15s down on winner Clara Hughes, of Canada.
In the men's event, New Zealanders Gordon McCauley, Heath Blackgrove and Glen Mitchell were ninth, 10th and 11th respectively. The winner was Australian Cadel Evans.
