Kiwi Stuart Farquhar appears a real prospect of a medal in the men's javelin, qualifying for tomorrow's final with his first throw.
Farquhar, who claimed silver in Delhi, launched a 78.54 metre effort in his first attempt, surpassing the automatic qualification mark by half a metre.
The 32-year-old's throw was good for third-best among the 12 athletes to make tomorrow morning's final, set for 6.20am NZT, and he felt in good form ahead of his shot at gold.
"My body's good and my technique's getting better, so I'm hoping to step it up even more in the final," he said.
"There are a few guys who are throwing really well at the moment, so it's going to be a really hard competition.
