Bowls: Commonwealth Games squad named

A 26-strong Commonwealth Games bowls training squad has been confirmed.

It includes the usual suspects such as Jo Edwards, Sharon Sims, Russell Meyer, Gary Lawson and Rowan Brassey.

Sean Johnson and Wendy Jensen are unavailable, while Marlene Castle has retired from international play.

Richard Girvan has been rewarded for strong performances at the national championships, while 18-year-old Shannon McIlroy has also been included to build experience.

Radio bowls commentator Stu Scott says the men's selectors have a tough job ahead of them, but the women's team will be more predictable.

A trimmed 12 person team for Melbourne will be named in November after a series of training camps.

Stu Scott says the selection of the management team will be of great interest and is likely to be controversial.
