Olympian multi-sporter Hamish Carter provides an interesting addition to the lineup at the national athletics championships underway in Christchurch.
The champion triathlete will be competing in the 5,000 metres, although he has no delusions about his chances of winning the race.
Carter says being tested against the country's fastest five kilometre runners is a brilliant form of training for the Commonwealth Games.
He says cycling takes a lot of speed out of the legs, so specific running training should prepare the legs a little more for Melbourne.
Meanwhile the three leading middle distance runners who have qualified for Melbourne will provide another highlight, with Nick Willis, Adrian Blincoe and Paul Hamblyn battling it out tomorrow.
