Gareth Hyett has run the fastest 800m by a New Zealand athlete in New Zealand in six years but has to run still faster to make the Commonwealth Games.

In Wanganui, Hyett clocked 1m 47.85s but needs 1m 46.60s or better this weekend for Games selection. Mark Rodgers ran 1m 47.61s in March 2000.
