There's no shortage of sand on the Gold Coast beaches that will host the Commonwealth Games' beach volleyball competition.
However, International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) inspectors have ordered more coarse sand be brought in for the event, as the existing sand is too fine.
Commonwealth Games organisers in Australia said on Wednesday that the FIVB ruled the sand at Coolangatta Beach on the southern end of the coast was "too fine'' for the competition and tonnes of more suitable sand woul be imported from Brisbane, 100 kilometres north.
The Daily Mail reported it is likely to cost about AU$30 per tonne to import from Brisbane and will add to the AU$19 million cost of adding the sport to the Games - with only AU$10 million expected to be recouped from already sold out tickets.
