Every year star players emerge from the ranks of the Auckland's senior division A soccer competition and this year looks to be no exception.
Damien Patterson, 14, scored twice for St Peters in their 3-1 defeat of Kings and Patterson, who toured South America with the side last year, could now find himself a marked man.
In other results, Mt Albert Grammar beat Rangitoto College 1-0, Westlake Boys got home 3-2 over Kelston Boys and Auckland Grammar started their title defence with a 6-0 away win over newly promoted Onehunga High School.
The Chatham Cup kicks off this weekend with St Peters playing West Auckland, Auckland Grammar away to FC Whangarei and Mt Albert away to Hibiscus Coast.
Lawn Bowls
The Auckland college championships were held over the weekend at Bridge Park.
Leigh Dixon of St Peters beat Jason Lindsay of Sacred Heart in the boys' singles final, while Courtenay Gill of Edgewater College beat Earlene Gibbons of Mangere College in the girls' singles.
Brook Tippet and Stuart Phillips of Avondale College won the boys' pairs, while Edgewater's Sarah Kee and Amy Coghlan won the girls' pairs.
Waterpolo
Auckland's Diocesan have won the national girls' tournament for the first time, defeating Avondale 5-3 at Lower Hutt.
The result reversed an earlier Diocesan 3-1 loss to Avondale.
Anna Sieprath was player of the tournament.
Climbing
North Shore schools dominated the year's second event on Sunday.
Almost 30 climbers from 12 schools competed. Kris Green of Northcote College won the senior girls'. George Harris of Long Bay College took out the junior boys' title. Julian Pawley of Birkenhead College won the senior boys' and Christine Gunn of Northcote the senior girls'.
Golf
The North Harbour teams' golf tournament attracted 19 entries on Monday.
Best-combined gross of three players went to Massey High. Best Stableford to Kaipara College.
Simon Cresswell of Rangitoto College hit the best round, a 69 at the Helensville Golf Club.
Basketball
Auckland college basketball starts this Friday with eight schools competing in the girls' premier grading rounds.
Takapuna play Tamaki, Manurewa take on Westlake, Avondale are away to Diocesan at 7.30pm preceded by EGGS versus Penrose.
In the boys' section there are two games at Kelston College. The first at 6pm features Rutherford against Avondale followed by Kelston and Auckland Grammar. Westlake face Rosehill and Takapuna play Mt Albert.
