The Auckland region's promising college long-distance runners were out in force at the secondary schools road-running championships.
The change from the undulating terrain of cross-country running to the harder, unforgiving tarseal did not appear to slow Kaipara College's Leonora Joy or Rangitoto College's Rebecca McEnaney.
Both were winners of their respective senior and intermediate girls' races at the Domain, adding the titles to their cross-country victories earlier in the year.
Joy dominated the senior girls' 5.3km race, finishing nearly two minutes ahead of Diocesan's Debbie Tanner.
McEnaney had to fight for her victory, eventually running clear of Elizabeth Orchard (Epsom Girls' Grammar) by five seconds.
Dylan Mordaunt (Sacred Heart) returned from injury to ward off steady improver Nick Dalton (St Kentigern) in the senior boys' 6.4km race.
Auckland Grammar won the teams' event.
Terenzo Bozzone (Rangitoto) was made to work for his intermediate boys' victory, with Auckland Grammar's Todd Calkin and Shaun Krawitz and Matthew Thomson (St Kentigern College) pushing him. They all crossed the line within six seconds of each other. Bozzone finished in a smart 17m 14s for the 5.3km circuit.
Kate Campbell was too quick for the junior girls' field, winning in 14m 10s over 3.6km.
TENNIS
Auckland Grammar have continued their dominance of the senior boys' competition. With one round to play Grammar have already secured the senior and junior boys' A1 titles.
The school, who have won the senior Auckland championships for all but one year in the last quarter-century, will be without their top three seventh-form players next year and with new zoning laws, they are set to lose some of the young talent who are no longer in their area.
The Grammar team of Simon Rea, Jacob Olson, Brendan Wright, Kiril Tcherveniachki, David MacMorran, Andrew Klinkert and Chris Hillier were clear winners in the senior boys' section, beating St Kentigern College 8-1 to move out of reach of King's College for the title.
The girls' senior championships is wide open, with St Cuthbert's College still within Rangitoto College's grasp in the senior competition.
OUTRIGGING
It was all splash and dash on Onehunga Lagoon as Auckland schools battled for the college outrigging title. Papatoetoe High School were too strong for McAuley High in the junior girls' final, beating them by over a second.
Edgewater College were in their element in the junior boys' final.
Liston College's second team were two seconds back, with Liston 1 paddling in third.
McAuley and Liston Colleges took out the junior mixed final.

Westlake Boys' High School and Rangitoto College are among the favourites to win the North Island secondary school waterpolo championships starting in Auckland tomorrow.
Defending champions Westlake will face stiff competition from Wellington College and the capital's St Patrick's College.
