KEY POINTS:
Westlake Boys High senior tennis team were taken to the wire before beating St Kentigern 5-4 in a tense, hard-fought final.
It came down to the last match of the tie at Vodafone Park on Saturday before Dane Johnson scored the vital fifth win to gave Westlake their only title on finals day.
The senior girls final was a more one-sided affair with St Cuthberts running out 7-2 winners over Rangitoto.
In the lower grades, St Kentigern (boys) and Baradene (girls) were outstanding, winning their respective intermediate and junior titles.
St Kentigern beat King's in both boys' finals while Baradene were just too strong for Diocesan in the girls' finals.
It was an outstanding effort from the Baradene teams, who went through the season unbeaten.
Their junior A1 team of Katherine Bilderbeck, Jayd Chemaly, Monica Chen, Harriet Dorrington, Rose Findlay and Rachel Wilson made it four junior titles in four years for the school in beating Diocesan 5-4.
The intermediate team of Vivian Chen, Clare Findlay, Emma Piper, Elizabeth Priest, Kylee Sinden and Amanda Wallace captured their A1 title with a 7-2 victory over Diocesan.CricketA smart 116-run fourth wicket partnership between Andrew de Boorder (56) and Jonathon Bassett-Graham turned the King's innings around and laid the foundation for their match-winning 267-8 against Rosmini when the Auckland competition resumed after the Labour weekend break.
Batting first after winning the toss, King's struggled a little early in their innings as the ball seamed around. Unfortunately, much of the good work from the Rosmini bowlers was undone as they gave away 50 extras.
In reply, Rosmini were struggling at 36-2 but by the midway point of their innings were only four runs down on King's at the same stage. But they could not maintain the momentum as Tim Southee took 4-23, assisted by wicketkeeper Bassett-Graham who picked up four catches and a stumping.
Avondale started strong against AGS with Arun Vejendla and Lucky Shah posting 45 for the first wicket before the innings crumbled with the next nine wickets falling for 104 runs.
In reply AGS reached 32 before three wickets fell in quick succession leaving Ryan Turner and Hugo McChesney to see them home in the 32nd over.
Pakuranga beat St Peters by four runs with Arron Arnold laying the foundation for their win in smashing 126 off 74 balls for Pakuranga in their total of 261-8.WaikatoThe strong St Peters School team continue to reign supreme in the 1st XI division one championship.
In a game delayed by rain, St Peters were sent in by Hillcrest HS in their top-of-the-table clash. Led by an impressive 81 from opener Sam Kilgour, St Peters reached a modest 171 after failing to build any worthwhile partnerships.
Chasing that total, and with it the chance to wrest the Dave Hoskin Trophy from a St Peters side who have held it all year, Hillcrest struggled.
At 13-3 after 10 overs and 49-4 after 20 it was never easy with only Oliver Leydon-Davis (30) offering even token resistance as the innings ended at 101 in the 39th over.
Cambridge kept pace with St Peters at the top of the table after three rounds with their 46-run win over Matamata College.
Batting first in the damp conditions, Cambridge, led by captain Jake Bezzant's 58 and with solid support from Shane Butcher, reached 176 with Anthony Marsh (4-31) the best of the Matamata attack.
At 41-0, Matamata were in with a chance in reply but once Brad Smith departed they struggled, although opener Toby Hawes did manage to get beyond 40.
Leg-spinner Sean Keeley turned in the best bowling of the day bagging 6-14 from eight overs.
In a game reduced to 25 overs a side, Morrinsville edged St Johns by three wickets.
Fraser HS were bundled out for 84 by the Hamilton BHS development team with spinner Mitchell Santer leading the way in taking 4-8 from seven overs.
HBHS hit off the runs they needed in the 20th over for the loss of three wickets.CurlingIn a huge upset, newcomers Auckland Girls Grammar beat national champions Westlake GHS 18-0 in the final of the Auckland championship at Paradice.
With big scores on the second, third and fourth ends, the AGGS team of Ophir Karon (skip), Samantha Khoo, Natalie Sargon and Elizabeth Henty put the game out of reach and coasted home.
The boys' championship was in complete contrast with Birkenhead Team Nui getting home 6-5 over Long Bay Gliders in a game in which the lead see-sawed throughout.
The mixed final went down to a measure on the final end before the Birkenhead team of Byungsuk Son (skip), Katherine Wright, Alex Hepple and Gun Whan Hyun got home 5-3 over Papakura.Water poloFifty-three teams will descend on Auckland today to prepare for the annual North Island championships.
