The Head of the Harbour regatta turned into an out-of-Auckland benefit when Waikato and Bay of Plenty schools won the trophies for the boys and girls under-18 eights.
Almost a thousand rowers from 35 schools in the upper half of the North Island competed.
Conditions on Lake Pupuke in Takapuna were tough, with a fresh southwesterly blowing down the 900m course.
Hauraki Plains College and Hamilton Boys High dominated the feature race, the boys eight.
Hamilton finished with a flourish to win by half a length.
Hauraki were the real surprise, beating many of the fancied schools in the nine-boat field. The girls trophy was won by Tauranga Girls by half a length from Baradene, with a Baradene crew also in third place.
Baradene won points overall for the girls, Auckland Diocesan were second and Tauranga Girls third.
Hamilton Boys and St Kentigern finished first equal in the boys and Westlake Boys were third.
Cricket
King's College enjoyed a 10-wicket win over Avondale College in the Auckland 1a Championship.
Avondale struggled to come to terms with the King's bowling attack and two run-outs did not help their cause as they were bundled out for 73. King's enforced the follow on after achieving a 111-run lead on the first innings.
Avondale batted determinedly second time around. Victor Davies was lucky to survive a catch behind off a technical no ball called when King's failed to warn the umpire of a change of bowler but fell soon afterwards for a tenacious 13 in a stand of 47. When Jeet Raval, who made an excellent 38, was dismissed Avondale's hopes were dented.
William Brittain produced four for 26 from 22 overs and Goldsbury two wickets for 21 from 14 overs. Tim Southee picked up the last three wickets for match figures of seven for 56 from 16.3 overs.
King's needed just 32 runs to win and Kai Petersen (21 not out) and Paul Fabian (9 not out) cleared the total to give King's the win.
In other results Westlake Boys beat Kelston Boys by an innings and 63 runs.
James Cowell stood out for Westlake by taking seven wickets.
St Kentigern College scored 214 for 9 off 50 overs with Mt Albert Grammar 126 all out off 40 overs.

A win was not a win for Cambridge High when they were victorious in the junior boys teams event at the tag team triathlon at Maraetai Beach in Manukau City.
The three-person team of Tom Martin, Kurt Barton and Sjoerd Nanwegtendonk won their category by more than two minutes from Auckland Grammar.
But their victory did not secure a medal, as they are not part of the College Sport Auckland region.
The triathlon featured more than 100 teams from triathlon powerhouses such as Diocesan, Auckland Grammar, Rangitoto College and St Kentigern and entrants from Botany Downs College in East Auckland and Long Bay College.
The podium places were shared among 10 Auckland area schools with the trio of Rangitoto College, Auckland Grammar and St Kentigern securing 18 of the 27 gold, silver and bronze positions between them.
