North Harbour's 1A minor semifinals start this weekend. Top qualifiers Westlake and Rosmini have a bye. Westlake took a thriller over Massey 27-20 in the final round match, meaning the westerners will host Takapuna Grammar on Saturday.
In the other games, Rosmini beat Rangitoto 30-10 and Takapuna Grammar edged Orewa 12-7.
League
MAGS' 22-10 victory over Manurewa in the final CRL Championship pool game confirmed the competition's top four. St Paul's, MAGS, Otahuhu and Kelston all qualify for this afternoon's semifinals , which will be played as follows over the next two Wednesdays:
1 v 2: winner goes straight to grand final, loser plays winner of 3 v 4.
3 v 4: winner plays loser of 1 v 2 for a grand final spot, loser is eliminated.
In the second-tier Plate competition, Aorere and Papatoetoe qualified for today's grand final at Mt Smart Stadium No2. Top seed Aorere beat Avondale 18-10, while Papatoetoe got past Westlake 14-4.
In the Bowl, Tamaki take on Manurewa B in the final, also at Mt Smart today.
Manurewa's Joshua Uta was crowned CRL Player Of The Year at an awards breakfast on Monday and named as the loose forward in the tournament team. Premier competition Coach Of The Year went to St Paul's Phil Sargeant, while Kelston's Sharon Mackey and Toni Humphreys shared Manager Of The Year. In the Under 15 9-a-side competition, Star To'a of St Paul's was MVP and top try and points scorer. The U85kg competition MVP was shared between Nofoaiga Limoni (Mangere) and Joseph Williams (Howick).
The final for the Championship division will be played on August 22 at Birkenhead War Memorial Park.
Football
St Kentigern and Sacred Heart both recorded 5-0 wins in the Auckland First Xi premier league on Saturday to stay atop the table.
Sacred Heart beat Westlake BHS and have a game in hand with three rounds to play. MAGS stayed just ahead of Auckland Grammar on goal differential, despite falling 1-0 to the latter. Macleans kept the pressure on Westlake with a 4-2 victory over King's, while Rangitoto could not make any headway after a 5-0 defeat by St Kent's.
MAGS hosts Rangitoto this Saturday and Westlake BHS travels to Auckland Grammar. Macleans host Sacred Heart.
Cross country
Sacred Heart's national champion senior cross-country team has just been selected to represent New Zealand at the World Secondary Schools Champs in Budapest in April 2016. Rhys Taucher will coach the team. This team includes James Uhlenberg (who finished second at the nationals), who was profiled in College Sport on June 3.
Netball
There's no stopping Maia Wilson.
In the midst of a busy Year 13 at MAGS, the Tall Ferns basketballer and New Zealand Schools netball goal shoot has signed with the Central Pulse for the 2016 ANZ Championship. She trialled for the Silver Ferns just weeks ago, the youngest to do so.
Wilson's MAGS and NZ Schools teammate, classy defender Holly Fowler, has signed with the Mystics.
