Impressive efforts in Jakarta have earned a trio of talented tennis players another chance to perform at an international level, this time in the Czech Republic.
Marina Erakovic, Joanna Carswell and Emma Hayman were members of the New Zealand under-14 girls team who finished second at the Asia/Oceania qualifying zone of the world junior championships in Jakarta.
The placing was New Zealand's highest yet and the result means a trip to the world junior finals in August.
The team of Erakovic (Glendowie College), Carswell (Diocesan) and Hayman (Wanganui Collegiate) lost 1-2 to top-seeded China in the final.
Erakovic, New Zealand's No 1 singles player, had an outstanding tournament, winning all six of her singles matches in straight sets and dropping only 22 games.
In the final, she clinched the only win for New Zealand when she defeated the Chinese No 1, Wan-Ting Liu, 7-5, 6-3.
Carswell was defeated by Yi-Fan Xu 0-6, 4-6 in her singles.
The New Zealanders combined in the doubles but lost 4-6, 1-6 to Liu and Xu.
To reach the final, New Zealand beat Japan and Indonesia.
RUGBY
New Moascar Cup holders Kelston Boys High are two defences away from a classic encounter against Mt Albert Grammar as a test curtain-raiser.
Kelston lifted the prestigious trophy from De La Salle College with a hard-fought 16-8 victory on Saturday. Kelston are unbeaten in the 1A championships.
After their bye in this week's round, Kelston will defend the cup against St Paul's and Otahuhu Colleges at home.
If Kelston retain it they will meet Mt Albert in the curtainraiser to the All Blacks-Ireland test at Eden Park on June 15.
For two particular staff at Kelston, seeing the cup presented at Monday's assembly must have given them a sense of deja vu.
Guidance counsellor Logan MacPherson was the captain of the 1977 cup-winning team, and assistant backs coach Wynne Jones was the head coach at the time. Kelston also held the cup in 1990 and 1999.

Auckland students dominate the schoolboys team, who will play their South Island counterparts, Queensland and New South Wales from June 19-22.
