KEY POINTS:
Golf has grabbed the public's imagination again following Danny Lee's outstanding win in the Johnnie Walker Classic in Perth on Sunday.
The sport's officials are now hoping the next Danny Lee might emerge from the keenly-contested amateur competitions like that played by Auckland and North Harbour secondary schools.
Karaka-based Strathallan College is setting the early pace in the Auckland competition with wins in their opening two matches over Pakuranga College and, on Monday, Auckland Grammar.
Promoted from the second division, the South Auckland school is led by Hayley Clinning who is back at the school after playing for now-demoted Kings College last year.
She plays off a 2.9 handicap out of the Manukau GC and plays at No 1 for Strathallan ahead of Tyler West (3.1 handicap), Livio Godinich (4.0) and Shiv Savherwal (6.0).
Under the scoring system, points are won on each hole with the result decided over the four matches played over nine holes. Playing first, the lowest handicappers led the way, Clinning beat AGS No 1 Hamish MacIntosh 7-2.
Wins for Haden Morgan, 5.5-3.5 over West and Sam Boniface 5-4 over Godinich left the match to be decided in the battle at the bottom of the order where Savherwal beat Logan Driver 6.5-2.5 for a final 21-15 win for Strathallan.
CRICKET
Auckland: A 15-run win over Westlake BHS in a low-scoring one-day match has handed Kings College the early lead in pool A of the 1A championship while St Kentigern are clear at the top of pool B after a resounding win over Kelston BHS.
In a match dominated by the ball, Kings managed a modest 130 in batting first as they struggled to master the Westlake attack led by Andrew Cowell and Wesley Jarman who picked up three wickets each.
Defending such a low score was never going to be easy but the Westlake batting, apart from the 41 scored by Travis Committie, failed dismally and they managed just 115 in reply as Dylan Collier and Maxi Ofner snared seven wickets between them.
Led by Sean Solia's 58, promoted St Peter's got up to beat Macleans College by five wickets. Batting first, Macleans, with captain Scott Yeoman scoring 56, reached 180/8 to which St Peter's replied with 181/5 to continue their good start to the rain-plagued season.
In another low-scoring affair in which no batsman reached 30, AGS edged Rosmini by 28 runs after scoring just 143 in batting first. A four-wicket bag for Henry Helsby proved decisive.
The pool B matches were more of the same. The 109 scored by MAGS would never have been considered a winner but an even worse performance by Sacred Heart handed MAGS victory by 40 runs.
Fred Klaasen took 5-20 to give Sacred Heart every chance but his effort was later matched by Matt Guy who claimed 4-10 to steer MAGS home.
In the closest match of the round, the points were shared when Rangitoto and Avondale finished in a tie after scoring 131 runs in their 30 overs.
St Kentigern bucked the trend. They raced to 251 on the back of solid knocks from Brad Stanfield and Jordan Drinkall and led by Matthew Selby's 3-3 from 16 deliveries, skittled KBHS for just 64 to win by 187 runs.
WAIKATO
Another round hit badly by the shocking weather. Two matches were not played and two were called off in the third round of the 1st X1 competition.
Morrinsville College and Te Aroha College were the winners in matches that produced results although Te Aroha's match against Melville/Fraser was reduced to 40 overs. Batting first, Te Aroha reached 121 with Ryan Waite (46) the main contributor.
Needing three runs an over to win, they rarely looked likely with James Dale top scoring on 21 as Ricco de Thierry picked up 4-23 and Rowan Livingstone 3-10. The innings ended at 87 to hand Te Aroha victory by 34 runs.
Morrinsville chased down their target to beat St John's College by three wickets. Sent in, St John's managed only 113 of which James Evetts contributed 42. Tom Arnold, 3-14, was the best of the Morrinsville attack.
TRIATHLON
The continuing growth in triathlon is again reflected in the numbers for Friday's team tag championships at St Kentigern College.
With 17 teams (51 competitors, from a total of 417), the host school has the biggest representation. All-girl schools Diocesan, Corran and St Cuthberts are well represented with 11, 9 and 8 teams respectively. The races will start at intervals between 10am-11.15am.
WAKA AMA
After last year's washout, the 500-plus paddlers who will take to the waters of the Orakei Basin on Saturday for the Auckland SS senior regatta will be hoping for better weather.
In a hectic day's racing - 70 races are scheduled - heats will begin at 8.45am and continue until 4pm.
