The pair were too good for fellow students representing schools from all over the country with Blomqvist winning the 125cc Rotax Max Light class and Gabb finishing sixth in Senior 100cc Yamaha Light. Christchurch's Jordan McDonnell and Jacob Mitchell (Chisnall Wood Intermediate/Windsor Primary) won the intermediate/primary category one, and Arie Hutton (King's College) and Maddie Wise (Napier BHS) the Bruce McLaren KartSport Award in association with the Bruce McLaren Trust and Formula Challenge.
Individual national schools' class titles were won by Caleb Cross (cadet), Thomas Ingram (junior restricted 100cc Yamaha), Wise (junior 100cc Yamaha), Reid Harker (Formula Junior), Hutton (senior 100cc Yamaha Light) and Blomqvist (125cc Rotax Max Light).
NETBALL
In keeping with tradition, MAGS and EGGS turned in another exciting, sometimes feisty, match - a classic encounter befitting the Centennial of Auckland Netball.
MAGS eventually prevailed by a point but had to come from behind to do it after EGGS jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first quarter before MAGS levelled the scores at 8-8. The second quarter was more of the same with the teams going goal-for-goal before MAGS took a one-goal halftime lead.
In the third quarter EGGS trailed by two heading into the last quarter. EGGS had the last say by sinking a penalty but MAGS held on to win 33-32 to give themselves a confidence boost ahead of Saturday's semifinals.
RUGBY
The under-18 team representing the Blues franchise successfully defended their Secondary Schools Regional title with a comprehensive 36-12 win over the Chiefs. The annual championship also doubled as a selection tournament for the NZSS team to be named next month.
NORTH HARBOUR
Rosmini will have home advantage when they line up against Massey in what promises to be a fitting finale to the 1A championship on Saturday.
The two warmly favoured teams emerged victorious from their keenly fought semifinals to book their places in the season's showpiece.
Westlake travelled to Massey for what promised to be the tighter of the two semifinals as they had been separated by only a point in round-robin play earlier in the season when Massey kicked a late penalty to win. Massey again proved too strong, taking the win 15-9.
In the other semifinal, Rosmini were comfortable 35-6 winners over TG.
In the other 1A fixture, Mahurangi hosted Rangitoto in the 5th/6th play-off, and in a close encounter won 27-19.
In the 1B division penultimate round, Glenfield edged Long Bay 29-25, Northcote thumped a struggling Whangaparaoa 53-5 and Orewa beat Kaipara in another close encounter, 16-10.
In the 1C division, WBHS 2nd XV thumped Hato Petera 71-0, Birkenhead beat KingsWay 10-6 and Massey 2nd XV eventually put away Albany Senior High 17-3. - Toby Hurley
SOCCER
Another odd goal win, this time 1-0 over St Kentigern was enough for MAGS to wrap up the Auckland SS premier title race with two games in hand. It was coach Kevin Fallon's 10th title in 15 years. In the other five years MAGS have been runners-up.
In a keenly contested affair, the vital goal was scored by Martin Pavic in the 54th minute, a solo effort where he created enough room inside the box to curl his left-footed shot around the St Kentigern goalkeeper Sam Horn.
The final whistle sounded to celebrations from the class of 2011, many who knew the disappointment of letting the championship slip from under their noses in season 2010.
The under-13 team beat Avondale 8-1 in their Knockout Cup semifinal to progress to next month's final. The 1st XI were in action against Rutherford in the Senior Knockout Cup semifinal late yesterday and tomorrow the under-15s meet Macleans for a place in that Cup final.
At Sacred Heart in other premier action and on a day when their 1st rugby XV lost their chance to cap an outstanding season when upset in the semifinals, the Sacred Heart first XI scored two unanswered second-half goals to beat WBHS 2-0 - a reversal of the first-round result.
WATER SPORTS
Kristin School is taking pride in the international success of their pupils.
Leonard Takahashi is among a small contingent of young New Zealand sailors winning accolades around the world, enjoying success in a series of international Optimist sailing regattas in preparation for the World Championships to be held in Napier in December.
And Anton Sunde played a key role in the success of the New Zealand under-16 water polo team across the Tasman. Competing in two tournaments in a hectic five-day period, the Kiwis retained the Queensland Cup Challenge with victory in both matches. That two-game series was followed by an eight-team tournament. The New Zealanders beat Queensland and New South Wales before claiming a 13-7 win over the NSW Warratahs.
Sunde was named the transtasman MVP.
