Auckland is not alone in having such one-sided games.
North Harbour has posted scores of 44-8, 55-5, 41-7 and 44-5 in the opening rounds of this season's 1A championship and Counties Manukau is yet to start its competition but last season had 67-0, 57-0, 61-3 romps and, in the semifinals, 72-0.
A disturbing pattern quickly emerges.
There is no fun in being on the wrong end of such scorelines especially when it appears it would not need too much planning to come up with a championship that would be acceptable and fairer - to players at both ends of the spectrum.
A premier championship of say 10 teams - six from Auckland, three from North Harbour and one from Counties Manukau (or a similar mix of up to 12 teams) - would surely be meaningful and produce close, keenly-contested matches rather than the embarrassing one-sided affairs seen on both sides of the bridge.
The Counties Manukau Union said such a proposal was a "topic of discussion" two years ago but it appears opposition from Auckland meant there was no move for change.
Counties Manukau has now aligned itself with the Chiefs but that means added travel - as far as Taupo and Rotorua. For the first time, Counties Manukau will have seven schools playing in its 1st XV A grade.
College Sport chief executive Manoj Daji said he has been trying for three years to "achieve the impossible" and admits "two [unions] are very keen".
Daji says, like soccer, rugby should have other senior grades citing the 1B and 1C competitions and a visible promotion-relegation system to ensure the best teams play the best teams no matter where they come from.
The Auckland Rugby Union maintains it has nothing to gain from any change but did say there was to be a review and that a Super City competition would be one discussion point, but added it was a two to three-year initiative.
In opposing such a move, ARU officials say why should a team like Kings (who finished seventh last season) lose their place in the top competition. The union also is certain that a team finishing seventh in its 1A championship would beat the top four North Harbour teams. The eight-team premier soccer competition has, as an example, six teams from Auckland and WBHS and Rangitoto from North Harbour. There is the same six-two split in its A1 league.
North Harbour rugby people point to other parts of the country where school teams from different unions meet in regular competition as a reason why it could, and should, work.
Their only (slight) concern is that players who might normally go to their nearest school would gravitate towards schools in the premier championship. To a degree, that is already happening with some schools accused of luring rugby talent with the offer of scholarships and academies.
With no teenage grades in North Harbour or Auckland club rugby these days, the emphasis is very much on schools and what they can do for the union's young talent. An elite city-wide school competition would give these players their chance to be seen by the Blues franchise of which North Harbour remains an integral part.
Such a move would, surely, be widely accepted as the vision of the Super City grows.
What's next? Netball? Hopefully, but that looms as an even greater challenge.
COLLEGE SPORT WRAP
Basketball
Westlake continued their unbeaten start to the premier boys' league with a 99-84 fifth round win at Avondale College.
With players missing through injury or absent overseas, only eight players were suited up as Westlake fielded a young team.
Both teams started the game as an offence showcase seemingly making a bucket on every offensive trip in the first quarter. Matt Freeman was shooting lights out from behind the three-point arc (he finished the game shooting five from seven) for the visitors but Avondale would not go away and stuck with Westlake for the first quarter and half until Westlake tightened their defence.
The Westlake offensive onslaught continued shooting great percentages throughout as Jaylen Gerrand and Sesi Palei claimed double-doubles, 19 points and 11 assists and 18 points and 14 rebounds respectively. Freeman top-scored with 25 points, ably assisted by Jackson Stent who was extremely efficient in shooting eight of nine for 17 points.
League
The top six teams have been confirmed for the Warriors Cup phase of the College Rugby League Premier First XIII Competition after final round-robin matches.
St Paul and KBHS came through the first phase with five straight wins. St Pauls beat Papatoetoe High 30-4 and Kelston accounted for Avondale College 26-0.
With St Pauls clear winners in pool B the heat was on in the clash between MAGS and Tangaroa to find the second team. In a tough battle, Tangaroa scored first but the Steve Price-coached MAGS, playing at home, led 10-4 at halftime and went on to triumph 22-10. That lifted MAGS to six points, level with Tangaroa, but MAGS went through with a vastly superior points differential.
With Otahuhu swamping Manurewa High 48-8 in pool C, all interest was on the outcome between Sir Edmund Hillary and Southern Cross with the winner going through. This was a tense tussle with Hillary surviving 16-12 to finish top of the pool with nine points.
Rugby
Auckland
In the televised match of the day, Kings were soundly beaten 27-15 away by a very efficient and well organised Auckland Grammar. It was Kings' first loss of the season.
The home team held an early advantage and were soon out to 10-0 before Kings responded with a Luke Reed penalty. AGS attacked again and came up with a further try to go to the break 15-3 ahead after Kings had been guilty of missing too many first time tackles.
In the second half AGS scored and converted again to lead 22-3 and an old-fashioned hiding was certainly on the cards. To their credit, the visitors came back with tries to Willis Alatini and Conor
Brooke-Cowden with Reed adding the extras for 22-15 and the momentum appeared to be shifting.
To their credit the home side dug deep and a sweeping move earned them another try in the corner and the conversion completed the scoring.
That late try earned AGS a bonus point and denied Kings the bonus point for finishing within seven.
Kings now face KBHS away in another match of the round while there will also be plenty of interest in St Peters' trip to play De La Salle.
Playing away, St Peters scored their third straight win with an emphatic 55-0 victory over newly promoted Papatoetoe. Playing with the wind in the first half, Papatoetoe took the game to St Peters and were unlucky not to score on two occasions in the opening stanza. A converted try just before halftime to in-form fullback Jordan Trainor allowed St Peters to go to the break with a flattering 17-0 lead.
St Peters were dominant in the second half, scoring six unanswered tries as their forward pack overwhelmed Papatoetoe to provide quality ball for the backs who ran rampant.
For Papatoetoe, No8 Emmanuel Sefo was impressive while centre Oliveti Kata looked dangerous with limited opportunities. For St Peters, blindside flanker Tim Houghton played his best game of the season and wing Eljen Petersen was powerful on both defence and attack. Jordan Trainor was awarded man of the match for the second straight week, scoring an impressive 25 points.
North Harbour
Making the most of home advantage, Takapuna Grammar claimed a 48-0 win over Mahurangi College in a gruelling, often physical encounter.
From the kick-off, the hosts aimed to dominate with an offensive game. After an early kick deep into Mahurangi's territory, TGS attacked again with a pass finding left-wing Fin Gilmore in the clear and he went over in the corner.
Frequent strong runs from the Takapuna side maintained good pressure, and their strong work ethic paid off with No 8Grant Thompson scoring their second try for a 10-0 lead.
Prop Sam Cheesman scored a third try for Takapuna, the physicality of the game clearly taking a toll on Mahurangi's performance. The conversion by fullback Conor O'Toole gave TGS a 17-0 lead at the break.
Initially, the second half proved a far more even contest until Thompson scored his second and third tries and a 29-0 advantage which continued to grow as captain and centre Sean Wainui crossed for a try followed by two for O'Toole, who also kicked another two conversions to complete the comprehensive eight tries to none victory.

Waikato
In Hamilton, Hamilton Boys HS successfully defended the Moascar Cup with a convincing 35-7 win over New Plymouth BHS in the opening round of the Super 8 competition.
The home team Hamilton outscored their visitors four tries to one, with the goal kicking of first-five Bryn Gatland extending the winning margin. Gatland was successful with three conversions and three penalty goals.
Hamilton travels this weekend to play Palmerston North BHS.
