A large number of Auckland secondary schools will be travelling to the Waikato in the next few days for the Maadi Cup rowing regatta, starting on Monday at Lake Karapiro and running through to Saturday.
A total of 1593 students will take part from 105 schools around the country.
The Maadi Cup (U-19 eights) will once again be keenly contested. Defending champs St Pauls Collegiate from Hamilton won the North Island champs ahead of Hamilton Boys, with Kings College third. These schools will be challenged by Christs College, who recently won the South Island champs.
The girls U-19 eights, or Dawn Cup, could be a battle between Tauranga Girls and southern schools St Margarets and Rangi Ruru. Tauranga won the North Island champs ahead of Gisborne Girls and Baradene.
TENNIS
Kings College student Ake Garnjanagoonchorn took advantage of the absence of GD Jones and Kiril Tcherveniachki to win the Auckland secondary schools boys' tennis title.
Garnjanagoonchorn beat Adam Staub, of St Peters, in the final.
Rosehill College's Shona Lee, who stepped up from the junior grade last year, won the seniors by defeating Lucy Cole, of St Cuthberts, in straight sets.
ATHLETICS
The North Harbour Champion of Champions Athletics meeting was a night to remember for the Lambrechs family. Tracey Lambrechs excelled in the field, winning the senior girls' shotput and javelin titles, and younger sister Chantal set a record 27.96m in the junior javelin and was fourth in the shotput.
Sebastien Suaniu of Birkenhead College won the senior boys' shotput with a record-breaking effort of 14.41m, beating the old mark by nearly a metre.
In the sprint events, Steve Harris of Westlake Boys High School and Leeane Cooper of Rangitoto College won the senior boys' and senior girls' titles respectively. In the Auckland champs, Vandermade of St Kentigern College underlined his all-round potential at Mt Smart Stadium.
Jordan broke two field event records in winning the intermediate javelin with a throw of 53.24m and the long jump with a leap of 7.05m, and bagged the 100m and 200m sprint double.
Another performance of note was Elizabeth Orchard of EGGS in middle distance winning the 800m/ 1500m double.
At the Counties Manukau champs
Louise Jones of Manurewa High School won the 100m, 200m, 400m and long jump titles. She broke a 13 year old record in winning the 200m title in a time of 25.66secs. Kyle Boss of Aorere College broke the junior boys 800m race in a record time of 2minutes 10.86 seconds. He also won the long jump title.
Richard Mataroa of Manurewa High took out the senior 100m 200m sprints.
TRIATHLON
North Harbour athletes continued their domination of secondary schools triathlons with Benjamin Pattle of Kristin School winning the senior boys title and Rangitoto's Anna Hamilton the senior girls race.
Rebecca Spence of Takapuna Grammar won the intermediate girls three minutes ahead of her nearest rival to add to her recent Auckland title.
VOLLEYBALL
Avondale College continued its domination of girls volleyball with two teams in the final for the second consecutive year.
In the boys competition Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate defeated Auckland Grammar in four sets in the final.
