Auckland Grammar's bid to make the national secondary schools rugby final came unstuck in Rotorua, when they lost to Rotorua Boys' High 16-3.
For Rotorua, having worked their way into the final, the aim is to go one better than last year, when they were beaten finalists to Wesley College.
This year, Rotorua will play Napier Boys' High, who beat Otago Boys' High 32-13 in the other semifinal.
The Rotorua-Grammar game was as tight and as tough as expected.
The home side scored two tries to nil for a 16-3 victory.
The tryscorers for Rotorua were Steve Setephano and Viliami Waqaseduadua with Willie Ripia kicking the other points. Jamie Helleur kicked a penalty for Grammar.
The final will be held on Friday at Eden Park at 3.30pm as a curtainraiser to to the Auckland-Canterbury NPC game.
