Rosehill College student Shona Lee won the national U-16 tennis title with a solid performance yesterday in Glen Innes.
Lee defeated Western Springs College's Brittany Teei 6-2, 6-4 in the final. Both girls are aged 14.
Rade Radinovich, of Auckland Grammar, won the boys' final against St Kent's Martin Colenbrander 6-4, 6-4.
Radinovich was also selected for the New Zealand U-16 boys' team to compete in the junior Davis Cup Asia/Oceania qualifying tournament in Jakarta from April 29 to May 4.
James Pilbro, from Kings College, and Jeffrey Birse, from Senior College, join Radinovich to form a strong side that finished fourth in the Australian interstate teams champs this year.
BADMINTON
A New Zealand team are on target to win the June Bevan under-17 badminton trophy.
Defending champions Northern New Zealand No 1 are unbeaten after two stages of pool play at the Hobart event.
Northern finished stage one at top of their pool after two 16-0 wins against Geraldton Midwest and Central NZ 2.
Central NZ 1 head pool 2, with Northern NZ 2 second and the Victorian Devils third.
The Southern Region NZ were second in pool C.
With one round to play in stage two, the Northern side are unbeaten after three matches and are first in the top pool, dropping just two games.
Northern (Alan Chan, Henry Tam Michelle Chan and Tina Chow) sit ahead of Western Australia, who are expected to be their toughest competition at the tournament, which continues until Saturday.
YACHTING
Kerikeri High School demonstrated their mastery of conditions by winning all but one race at the schools team racing regatta in Napier last week.
The only team to beat Kerikeri were Auckland Grammar School, who tied with Westlake Boys High overall but took second place on a countback.
Mahurangi College completed the championship a close fourth.
St Cuthberts were the top girls team in overall seventh place.
NETBALL
The national secondary school team for this year have been selected after trials in Palmerston North.
There are three National Bank Cup players in the side: Southern Sting's Emma Moynihan and Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic's Casey Williams and Laura Langman.
The team, coached by Tania Karauria, will play in the 2003 Trans Tasman Netball Challenge against the Australian secondary schools team, Aotearoa U-19 and a Pasifika U-19 on May 28-30 at Avondale College.
Karauria has been impressed with the high standard of play and general preparation.
Although Southern Sting coach Robyn Broughton believes there are not enough good netballers in the northern part of the North Island, most of the secondary school side are from Taupo north.
