KEY POINTS:
Wentworth College broke new ground on their recent transtasman foray.
The first New Zealand school to take up the long-established Olympic sport of modern pentathlon, they returned from the Oceania Championships in Melbourne with colours flying. Felix Mann led the charge for the Gulf Harbour school with victory in the junior championship in which fellow team member Taylor Rhind finished third.
There was further success for the Jak and Harry Charles, Jazmin Hopper, Lizzie Morse, Louise Mann and Amanda and Gideon van Zyl in mixed competition.
In the two months since they tried their hand at the sport - which involves shooting, swimming, fencing, show jumping and running - the team members have quickly responded to expert coaching led by NZ Fencing coach Barry Moore and this country's greatest pistol shooter, Greg Yelavich. Schools from Australia, Japan and the US contested the championships.
GENERAL
For the second successive week, play was washed out in Auckland and Waikato cricket. The teams scheduled to play today's Marryatt Cup finals at Cornwall Park will be hoping for better conditions.
The senior Waka Ama regatta at the Orakei Basin was called off after just 22 races. Organisers now hope to combine the seniors with the annual junior competition in November.
VOLLEYBALL
More than 60 teams will go head-to-head in the annual Auckland SS championships.
One of the most popular events on the ASB College Sport programmes has again attracted a strong entry, with Penrose High defending the boys' title they won from Avondale College and Westlake BHS last year. McAuley HS will attempt to defend the title they claimed ahead of Tangaroa College and MAGS last year.
De La Salle have won eight-from-eight in the premier championship this year to lead by two points from Rangitoto College, who warmed-up for the championships, which start tomorrow at the ASB Stadium, with a hard-fought 3-2 win over neighbours WBHS.
McAuley are also unbeaten through eight rounds and have already taken a six point lead over Manurewa, Avondale and Mangere College.
