CRICKET
Kelston Boys High retained the R. H. Marriot Cup with a solid victory over King's in the Auckland one-day competition.
In a match umpired by internationals Billy Bowden and Doug Cowie, Kelston bowled superbly to have King's all out for 81.
Chris Schieb took three wickets for eight, and Kelston's fielding included two direct-hit run-outs.
Kelston scored the required runs for the loss of five wickets, with Anand Patel hitting 20 and Paul Matthews 28.
The team, captained by Shaun Page and coached by Blair Webbey, are playing two-day matches against Westlake Boys and St Kentigern.
They will play the winner of the Howick College/Whangarei Boys match in the inter-zone final. The eventual winner will contest the national championships, the Gillette Cup, where Kelston were beaten finalists last year.
TENNIS
Kevin Doh, of Westlake, won the Waitakere Open with a walkover win against top seed Adam Thompson, of Belvedere.
Matthew Stark, 15, of Waikato, made the semifinals.
The highly-regarded junior plays for the Cambridge Tennis Club in the premier competition in Hamilton, but attends St Kentigern.
AWARDS
There was plenty of international experience on display at the Northland secondary schools sports awards dinner.
Yachtswoman Shandy Buckley, of Whangarei Girls High, won the sportswoman of the year and Travis Butler (karate) from Kerikeri High won the boys' award.
The female all-rounder award went to Kelly Bruce, of Otamatea High.
The male all-rounder was Joshua Woodman, from Northland College.
The awards are for students who excel in at least three different sports.
The Counties Manukau Sports Foundation awards will be held tomorrow night and there are some strong nominees in the junior sections.
Junior sportsman of the year contenders: Pukekohe High's Tom Thumath (sport climbing), Andy Williams (cycling) and Kieran Read (cricket) of Rosehill, and Doyle Matautia (softball).
The junior sportswoman candidates are Anna Eason of Macleans (boardsailing), Belinda Castles of St Cuthberts (gymnastics), Michelle Kingi (softball), April Brough of King's (athletics) and Rebecca Linton (swimming).
Nominated as athlete with a disability is Liam Sanders of Pukekohe High (boccia).

Junior sportsman: Eamonn Gaffney (Auckland Archery Club); Evarn Tuimavave (Marist/Richmond Rugby League Club); GD Jones (West End Tennis Club); Rob Nicol (Cornwall Cricket Club).
Junior sportswoman: Marina Erakovic (Kohimarama Tennis Club); Miranda Powrie (Kohimarama Yacht Club); Rachel Rassmussen (Auckland Netball Centre).
